How to recreate the '100 followers' trend that actually brings the right people together?
Medium is a wonderful renaissance platform for modern-day writers and thinkers. But like any other platform, it has its ups and downs. One of the downs is, you guessed it, a flood of “100-follower articles” that pour into the recommendations section every day. On a platform with so many intelligent, savvy, creative, and innovative people, I believe we can do better.
As a writer in a startup, I don’t want to surrender to the “follow-for-follow” clickity-click business because:
1. I don’t want to bother people with content they don’t want to read;
2. I'd rather not commit to reading tons of content that's nothing to do with my interests;
Tips on how to gather followers and become a follower in a more meaningful way:
- Create and utilize specified hashtags.
Why are we so dry with our hashtags? Ideas: 100 for art; 100 for technology; 100 for dating advice; 100 for cooking; 100 for business… - When you participate in a 100 followers article comment section, consider: What kind of people would like to follow you?
Example: 'I would love to gather 100 followers who are interested in contemporary art!' - Comment and follow the articles that match your content and also your genuine interests.
- Do read the articles. I couldn’t agree more with Matt Hampton: I’m Tired of Writers Who Don’t Read.
